Georgia Teacher Named 2011 National Language Teacher of the Year

December 6, 2010 - State School Superintendent Brad Bryant today announced that Clarissa Adams Fletcher was named the 2011 National Language Teacher of the Year by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Mrs. Adams Fletcher is an Advanced Placement and Level II Spanish teacher at Dunwoody High School in the DeKalb County School System.
“It’s an honor to see Georgia's teachers being recognized for their continued passion and dedication to student learning,” said Superintendent Bryant. “Mrs. Adams Fletcher exemplifies the caliber of the teaching force we have in Georgia.”
The award was created to recognize a foreign language teacher who exhibits excellence in language teaching. The selection process includes the submission of a portfolio and a teaching video. Nominees are first evaluated by their state language organization, after which each state submits its top candidate to one of five regional committees for additional review. Regional winners are evaluated and interviewed by the ACTFL awards committee. In her role as spokesperson for language education over the coming year, Mrs. Adams Fletcher will deliver presentations at foreign language conferences and appear at events to promote language education.
Mrs. Adams Fletcher was one of five regional winners from around the U.S. who were finalists for the national award. She was nominated by the Foreign Language Association of Georgia (FLAG) as Teacher of the Year for 2009, and then chosen by the Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT) as SCOLT Teacher of the Year and their nominee to the ACTFL competition.
