Human Resources

The Georgia Department of Education provides leadership and service to local school systems and operates three State Schools for students with hearing and vision disabilities.

The mission of Human Resources is to hire, retain and compensate employees with the skills and abilities to accomplish the purpose and goals of the Department. Human Resources achieves this by serving as a strategic player with Department personnel and providing quality leadership, technical assistance and accurate information. This mission will be achieved with a constant focus on continuous process improvement.

The Application and Hiring Process

The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE), a State of Georgia government agency, is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The GaDOE does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, disability, or age in its employment practices.

In accordance with Public Law 99-603, also known as the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, the GaDOE employs only U.S. citizens and lawfully authorized alien workers. All persons hired by the GaDOE are required to verify identity and employment eligibility. The GaDOE is a registered participant in the federal work authorization program, commonly known as E-verify, and uses this program to verify the employment eligibility of all employees. The GaDOE’s federally-issued User ID for the E-verify program is 46420.

All persons hired by the GaDOE must agree to undergo drug screening and a criminal background investigation.  Additionally, all persons hired and assigned to be a State Purchasing Card holder (at the time of initial hire or later) must agree to also complete a credit check in accordance with state requirements.

After viewing the list of current GaDOE job opportunities, prospective applicants must apply for specific vacancies. The job announcement number(s) and job title(s) must be included in the cover letter or application/resume for applicants to be considered for employment. The Human Resources division reviews applications for minimum job qualifications and forwards only those who meet the minimum qualifications to hiring managers; hiring managers then make interview selections. Only top candidates selected for interviews will be contacted by the hiring managers. Recruitment may be closed when a satisfactory applicant pool is identified; however, most job announcements remain open until positions are filled.  Due to the large volume of applications received by the Human Resources division, we are unable to provide information on your application status.

A resume or application for GaDOE employment must include the applicant’s daytime telephone number, salary history, and employment history with employer addresses and telephone numbers. Because all hiring recommendations for new employees must be approved by the State Board of Education at its monthly meetings, the recruitment process may take one to three months to select and hire a candidate.

State-Operated Schools for the Deaf and Blind

The Georgia Department of Education operates three state schools for the deaf and blind: the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf in Clarkston, the Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Spring, and the Georgia Academy for the Blind in Macon. Prospective applicants must apply directly to the school in which they are interested. State School personnel are employees of the Georgia Department of Education. All hiring recommendations require approval of the State School Superintendent and the State Board of Education. All persons hired by the State Schools are required to verify identity and employment eligibility and will undergo a fingerprint and criminal background investigation. Some State School positions require pre-employment and random drug testing.
