This suggested process for developing a cybersafe school environment is based on the NetSafe Cybersafety Model.

  1. The cybersafety team is set up.
  2. The principal and board develop a cybersafety policy
  3. The cybersafety team meet and consider what additional rules/guidelines staff and students may need, specific to their own school situation.
  4. The cybersafety team develops the mandatory acceptable use agreements(referred to in this kit as use agreements) for all staff and students.
  5. The technology specialist advises on what electronic security is appropriate for the school.
  6. The cybersafety team develop management protocols so that any cybersafety incidents are responded to in an appropriate and consistent manner. The NetSafe School Incident Response Flowchart will be of assistance here.
  7. The use agreements are explained to students and their families. The cybersafety team will also assist teachers to integrate aspects of cybersafety into the curriculum (for example, by using NetSafe’s teaching material.
  8. Members of the cybersafety team attend the relevant NetSafe® Professional Learning modules.
  9. The cybersafety team convene regular meetings to maintain the school’s cybersafety program.
